What is Physical Therapy?

Physical therapy is designed to help patients from all walks of life and ages regain or maintain mobility and physical movement. Some people receive physical therapy because they have recently suffered a debilitating injury, while others receive it as part of ongoing treatment for a physical disability.

Physical therapy is most often provided by a physical therapist, who may be a physician or a specialized provider who has experience in fields such as orthopedic medicine, geriatrics, neurology or sports medicine.

Physical therapy treatment can consist of:

  • Strength building exercise
  • Endurance exercises
  • Mobility training
  • Massage
  • Hot or cold temperature therapy
  • Device training (crutches, wheelchairs, walkers)

Do I need Physical Therapy?

Physical therapy is recommended or offered for a number of conditions. Physical therapists typically offer treatment for the:

  • Back
  • Neck
  • Joints
  • Nerves
  • Muscles
  • Arms
  • Legs
If you are suffering from any of these issues, or experiencing any chronic pain, it’s possible you may need to see a physical therapist. In some states, a primary physician's referral is needed to see physical therapists, but in other states, that requirement is not necessary.

Physical therapists are highly trained to help patients work through issues relating to pain and injury.

Physical therapy treatment plans and the types of physical therapy differ greatly depending on your individual needs as a patient. Some physical therapists also offer occupational therapy.
